No one wants to experience a car accident, but in the unfortunate event that it happens, it’s important to know what to do. From a minor fender bender to a major vehicle collision, this step-by-step guide can help you stay calm and focused following an accident.

1. Check for injuries.

If you or a passenger in your vehicle is injured, call 911 immediately. Safety always comes first when it comes to car accidents and collisions.

2. If you can, move the vehicle to a safe area.

If you aren’t facing any serious injuries, move the vehicle out of traffic to a safe area. Once the car is parked, turn off the engine and turn on your hazard lights to warn other drivers on the road of the accident. This also helps emergency personnel quickly locate your vehicle.

3. Check on other parties involved.

If the accident involves another vehicle, check to make sure all other parties are safe. If the other driver or their passengers are injured, call 911 and wait for a medical team to arrive.

4. Call for help.

Even if no one is injured from the accident, it’s still important to call the police. The responding officers can help block off the scene and will fill out an accident report and other documentation about the incident. For insurance claim purposes, the officer can also help determine which driver is at fault.

5. Gather information.

You’re going to need to exchange information with the other parties involved in the accident. Important details to gather following an accident include:

  • Full name(s) and contact information of the driver and other passengers (when applicable)
  • Vehicle description, including the color, make and model
  • Driver’s license and vehicle license plate numbers
  • Driver’s insurance company and policy number
  • Location, date and time of the accident
  • Name(s) and contact information from eyewitnesses (when applicable)
  • Police officer’s name and badge number

It’s also important to take photos of the accident scene, as these can come in handy during the insurance claim process.

6. File an insurance claim.

Find the contact information for your issuer on your insurance ID card. To reduce stress following a car accident, many insurance companies make it easy to file a claim, whether it’s over the phone, online or through a smartphone app. Or, you can rely on the experts at Main Auto Body to help file your insurance claim.
