While conversations concerning seasonal driving hazards are often focused on winter, each and every season brings with it a host of unique conditions and challenges that drivers should be aware of. If safety is at top of mind as the seasons change, check out four tips from Main Auto Body, Inc. to help you stay safe on the road this fall.
1. Be ready for rain.
Autumn often goes hand-in-hand with an increase in rainfall. This is even more relevant in the Pacific Northwest, where precipitation levels can be high year-round and, while often low at the start of fall, frequently pick up toward November. Because wet, slippery conditions can arise any time, it’s important to keep brakes and tires in good condition heading into this season.
2. Remember that fall is back-to-school season.
You may have gotten used to an absence of school buses during your summer commute, but with classes back in session, keep an eye out for school vehicles. It’s always important to stay alert to signals that the bus is stopped or about to stop and to leave a safe distance between your car and kids crossing the street.
3. Wet leaves can be dangerous.
Few sights are as stunning as an Oregon hillside cloaked in the vibrant colors of autumn. Unfortunately, good looks aren’t the only thing autumn leaves have to offer. They can also coat roads, and when large piles of leaves become wet, they can prove nearly as slippery as winter slush. Just be sure to leave plenty of space between your car and the vehicle ahead of you, so there’s time to brake.
4. Drive carefully when it’s foggy.
Fog is a year-round mainstay in many parts of the Pacific Northwest. In the autumn, however, it can be even more common – especially in the morning. If you’re dealing with a pre-sunrise commute, it’s essential to be aware of your surroundings if you’re traveling through fog. Consider leaving a bit early, so you can drive at a safer, lower speed, or outfit your vehicle with fog lights for enhanced visibility.
